NotebookLM API (Gemini Notebook API) v1

Introduction

Overview

The useapi.net NotebookLM API is an experimental REST interface for Google’s Gemini Notebook, formerly NotebookLM. It lets applications organize source material, ask grounded questions, and generate Studio assets from code while running through the user’s own Google accounts.

It works with free Google accounts, while paid Google AI plans provide higher usage limits. The service can distribute work across multiple connected accounts for unattended processing.

Key Features

  • Add web pages, YouTube videos, pasted text, uploaded files, and Google Drive files as notebook sources.
  • Ask questions against those sources and receive answers with citations.
  • Generate Audio Overviews, Video Overviews, reports, tables, quizzes, flashcards, infographics, slide decks, and mind maps.
  • Download audio, video, slides, and infographics in formats including M4A, MP4, PDF, PPTX, and PNG.
  • Receive quizzes, flashcards, and mind maps as structured JSON.
  • Discover sources with Google’s source discovery and Deep Research capabilities.

Notebook and Chat Management

The API can create and copy notebooks, retain notes, convert notes or chat conversations into sources, and group sources with topic labels assigned by Google. Notebook guides provide summaries, suggested reports, and suggested questions.

Chat history is preserved, and responses can use a learning-guide or custom persona with configurable answer length. Notebooks can also be shared with individual people or by link.

Automation and Scaling

Applications may submit URLs or text directly for artifact creation without first managing a notebook. The service creates a temporary notebook for the request and selects an account according to health, available job slots, and remaining usage.

Jobs can be polled or delivered to a webhook when complete. If all accounts are busy or have exhausted their current usage budget, the API returns a rate-limit response and may include Google’s reset time so the caller can wait, reduce request volume, or select another account.

Account Limits

Google usage budgets refill every five hours and also have weekly constraints rather than fixed daily generation counts. Notebook capacity depends on the Google plan: Free supports 100 notebooks with 50 sources each, Pro supports 500 notebooks with 300 sources each, and Ultra supports 500 notebooks with 600 sources each.
