Introduction

Overview

The Last SaaS is an experimental headless SaaS backend built around common application primitives. Instead of providing a conventional application interface, it lets assistants and AI agents work with structured backend capabilities through MCP, a CLI, or an API.

It is designed to work with assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT, as well as compatible coding tools and local agents. The project can be used as a hosted service or self-hosted from its open-source code.

Core Capabilities

  • Records support collections with text, number, date, and other field types, along with validation, filtering, sorting, counts, totals, and averages.
  • Files can be uploaded, downloaded, organized by path, listed, and retrieved with metadata such as type, size, upload date, and uploader.
  • Accounts support teammate invitations, member and administrator roles, pending invitation cancellation, and access removal.
  • Permissions can control read, write, delete, and management rights by user or role, including restrictions at record and field level.
  • Notifications can be immediate, scheduled, or recurring, with email delivery, workspace retention, user preferences, read state, and cancellation.
  • Audit logs record edits, uploads, membership changes, and permission updates with the responsible account and timestamp.

Working With Assistants

A user creates an organization and connects a supported assistant or agent through MCP or The Last SaaS CLI. Once connected, the assistant acts through that user’s account and remains subject to the same access rules.

This setup allows conversational operations such as adding and searching records, organizing files, inviting members, changing access rules, scheduling reminders, and reviewing recent activity. Assistants can also combine stored information into outputs such as dashboards when the necessary data is available.

Deployment and Portability

The hosted version is described as free, while the open-source project is available under the MIT license for self-hosting. Workspace data can be exported with a command, providing a path for moving data outside the hosted service.
