Overview
Strata is a self-service business intelligence platform built around a governed semantic layer. It combines semantic modeling, dashboards, analytics agents, and federated OLAP routing in one system intended for both non-technical users and AI agents.
The platform runs on a user’s machine with Docker and works with a coding agent during setup. Its model is defined through two YAML file types and naming conventions, validated against the warehouse, and carried to production through Git.
Key Capabilities
- Dynamic universes expose the model without requiring users to choose a view, explore, or cube before querying.
- Query validation previews each step and refuses semantically invalid requests before execution.
- Cross-domain blending aggregates facts to a common grain and joins them on conformed keys to prevent double counting.
- Smart routing selects an available fast OLAP engine and falls back to the warehouse when filters exceed the hot tier.
- Automated dashboard layout handles view sizing, placement, and color based on reading order.
- Agents can be created in the report editor and grounded in live measures and dimensions.
Governance and Distribution
Row-level security, masking, and automatic filtering are defined in the model, allowing reports and agents to inherit audience-specific access. Agent requests remain scoped to the modeled data, and unsafe query combinations can be refused rather than returning an incorrect result.
Reports can be scheduled or delivered through subscriptions. A Google Sheets add-on can place a Strata view in a spreadsheet and refresh the results in place.
Analytics Model
Strata supports standard, complex, snapshot, and level-of-detail measures, along with segments for comparing a cohort with a baseline in one view. Aggregate-aware routing can direct dashboard and agent queries to hot tiers while reducing repeated load on the primary warehouse.
Its open OLAP approach allows organizations to bring different engines rather than binding the analytics layer to a single warehouse or serving engine.
