Overview
What's Agent Doing is a Claude Code plugin that adds a status box above the prompt. It translates the agent’s current activity into plain English and shows how long the active step has been running, making long coding sessions easier to follow.
The display helps distinguish a slow operation from a stalled one without requiring users to decode commands and flags.
Key Features
- Names the current Claude Code step and continuously displays its duration.
- Expands to show the full sequence of actions taken during a turn.
- Marks completed, failed, denied, and interrupted actions with distinct statuses.
- Keeps separate rows for background agents while they continue working.
- Summarizes completed turns with action counts and total duration.
How It Works
The plugin uses Claude Code function hooks to observe activity and present concise descriptions in the terminal interface. The collapsed view focuses on the current operation, while the expandable history preserves earlier steps and their outcomes.
It is designed only to display status information. The project states that it uses no network access, reads no files, and collects no telemetry.
Setup and Compatibility
Installation is available through the Claude Code plugin marketplace, either from within Claude Code or through its shell command. After installation, users start a new session or reload plugins; marketplace updates can be applied later.
The plugin requires Claude Code running in a terminal or in the desktop application’s Code tab. It is free and distributed under the MIT license.
