Overview
OpenVINO is an open-source toolkit developed by Intel for optimizing, accelerating, and deploying deep learning models. It supports both generative and conventional AI workloads across cloud systems, AI PCs, edge devices, and physical AI applications.
The toolkit is designed to use Intel CPUs, GPUs, and NPUs efficiently, including x86 and Arm CPU platforms. Models can come from popular frameworks and be loaded directly or converted to the OpenVINO format.
Key Features
- OpenVINO Runtime runs inference locally and provides Python, C++, and C APIs on Linux, Windows, and macOS.
- OpenVINO GenAI supports deployment of generative AI models.
- OpenVINO Physical AI supports deployment of vision-language-action models on robots.
- OpenVINO Model Server serves generative and conventional inference separately or in Kubernetes environments.
- NNCF provides post-training and training-time model compression options.
Deployment and Performance
Automatic device discovery helps applications target available hardware without tying deployment to a single device. OpenVINO emphasizes a write-once deployment approach while seeking strong performance from the underlying hardware.
Minimal external dependencies and support for common package managers reduce deployment overhead. Custom compilation for selected models can further reduce binary size, while compiled-model caching improves subsequent startup performance.
For applications sensitive to startup time, OpenVINO can use the CPU for initial inference and switch to another device after the model has been compiled and loaded. This approach is intended to reduce first-inference latency.
Model Workflows
OpenVINO can load TensorFlow, ONNX, and PaddlePaddle models directly or convert them into its own format. Pre-optimized OpenVINO models are also available through a model hub, avoiding conversion for those assets.
Developers can link directly to the runtime for local inference, use the model server for microservice deployments, or integrate OpenVINO into PyTorch-native applications through PyTorch compilation support.
Community and Applications
The open-source project accepts bug reports, feature proposals, code changes, documentation improvements, and community support contributions. Documented case-study areas include healthcare, retail, safety and security, and transportation.
