Overview
Agent AFK is a local-first coding agent designed to run development tasks without continuous supervision. It operates from the terminal, coordinates specialized subagents, checks their work, and ends each session with a clear state and supporting evidence.
The project is editor-agnostic, so it can run alongside Cursor, VS Code, Vim, or another development environment. Its emphasis is goal-level delegation rather than inline editing or autocomplete.
Key Features
- Subagent orchestration delegates work and can execute parallel task pipelines in isolated Git worktrees.
- Adversarial verification re-derives completion claims before presenting a result.
- Named terminal states distinguish completed, blocked, awaiting-input, and interrupted sessions.
- Evidence pointers connect completed work to a file path, commit SHA, or test result.
- Persistent memory uses SQLite full-text search to retain facts across sessions and context compaction.
- Telegram notifications report when a run finishes or stalls and support responses to requests for input.
Development Workflows
Agent AFK includes reusable skills for common engineering work. Its feature pipeline covers specification, research, planning, parallel implementation, verification, healing, and shipping, with approval pauses where needed.
Other workflows diagnose bugs through parallel hypotheses, review changes across correctness, security, tests, performance, and API compatibility, and run release checks for completed local work. Results from parallel reviewers are synthesized into a single recommendation.
Terminal and Extensibility
The terminal interface renders tool calls with arguments, elapsed time, parallel indicators, and diff previews. It also supports command suggestions, background subagent jobs, shell passthrough, live loop-stage feedback, and permission-mode switching.
Lifecycle hooks can intercept stages such as tool use, session events, and subagent activity. MCP connections and plugins provide additional extension points, while model support includes Anthropic, OpenAI-compatible endpoints, and local providers such as Ollama or LM Studio.
Availability
Agent AFK is distributed as a CLI requiring Node.js 20 or newer. It is open source under the Apache 2.0 license, requires no account, and is presented as free to use.
